More about the history

In this part of Playa Ancha, where Fortunata Chacana Guest House is located, urban housing projects began in the middle of the 19th Century, encouraged by the family of Mr. Josué Waddington Blanchard, a successful English businessman. Later, the architect Arturo Llewelin Batchelor developed this housing project that consisted of two large Victorian style houses, completed in 1910.

The families that moved into this new neighborhood came from the middle class port population during a period of social upward mobility. Chileans and immigrants from all walks of life shared and created social ties that enriched the daily life of the neighborhood. As an example, the population attended literary and musical social gatherings that were organized various homes in the area. Fortunata Chacana is part of that local history and is reclaiming the value of the arts and culture of the era by decorating its spaces with works by contemporary artists who, today, live and work in Valparaíso. This time period is what we wish to show our guests, inviting them to feel the pulse and presence of this cultural and poetic past, inside this original, antique and beautiful Manor of Playa Ancha.
